Bitterroot Among First Wildflowers of Spring in Shrub Steppe

In healthy shrub steppe habitat, Lewisia redeviva or Bitterroot first emerges as succulent-like leaves in late March; then after the leaves wither, these beautiful pink flowers emerge. This photo was taken near a Ponderosa Pine forest.
